This route explores the beaches and points of interest in Salobreña. The route is 10.14 km long, has an elevation of 113 m and takes about 3.5 hours to complete.
We first visit the Monumento a las Víctimas de la Desbandá *. From here, we walk down to the Playa del Mayorazgo and follow the shoreline to the Playa de Salomar, the Playa del Molinillo and the Playa de la Charca. Here, we climb up to the top of the Peñón de Salobreña with its fantastic 360º views. We then cross the Playa de La Guardia, walk past the Azucarera del Guadalfeo and follow the coastal path (weather and sea permitting) round to the Caleta La Guardia. We then continue around the coastal path to the Caletón, before returning and following the Calle Real and Camino de la Caleta back to Salobreña, stopping at the first Mirador and then walking round the Castillo de Salobreña. From here, we walk along the Calle Estación to the Mirador Enrique Morente and then down to the Parque Municipal La Fuente before making our way back along the beach to the starting point.
* LA DESBANDÁ (or DESBANDADA):
When Nationlist forces took control of Málaga on 8th February 1937, many Republican citizens were forced to flee and seek refuge elsewhere. It has been estimated that as many as 100,000 - 150,000 elderly people, women and children left the city on that fateful journey to walk the 200 km to Almería along the N-340 road. As they struggled to escape, the caravan of fleeing people were bombarded and shot at by Nationalist forces and it is thought that a staggering 5000 people were mercilessly slaughtered. In recent years, many towns have erected monuments to commemorate these horrific events and each year, people retrace their steps to remember those who were so cruelly and needlessly killed.
